Steven Haywood Martin Charged on Three Counts
On Wednesday, May 2, 2018 at about 12:30 pm Beaufort County Emergency Communications received a report of an attempted armed robbery from the Chocowinity Convenient Mart in Chocowinity. Communicators dispatched the Chocowinity Police Department and Beaufort County Deputies to the call. The clerk on duty at the time, reported that a man entered the store brandishing a plastic gun and demanded money. After the clerk refused to comply with his demands he fled the store on foot.
Ten minutes later a second call came in to communications reporting a break-in at the Fountain Lodge in Chocowinity. The clerk on duty reported that while she was out to lunch, someone broke into the motel office and took the entire cash register.
While Deputies responded to the call at Fountain Lodge, an Officer with the Chocowinity Police Department and a Deputy with the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office spotted the suspect in the area of the Chocowinity Sports Complex and detained him for questioning. In an abundance of caution because of the close proximity to the Chocowinity Middle School, Deputies also responded there. The school was placed in a modified lockdown which lasted only a few minutes.
After Deputies assisted the Chocowinity Police in gathering statements from the store clerk and witnesses in the area, recovering physical evidence such as the outer clothing, gloves and plastic gun used at the Chocowinity Convenient Mart and locating the stolen cash register, the Chocowinity Police Department arrested Steven Haywood Martin, age 38 of Blounts Creek. Martin was charged with of Attempted Common Law Robbery, Felony Breaking and Entering and Felony Larceny After Breaking and Entering. Martin was confined to the Beaufort County Detention Center on a $50,000.00 secured bond.
