On July 5, 2012, the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a Larceny and Fraud that occurred at a residence on Trails End North in Washington, NC. The victim’s son reported his father’s checkbook was stolen and checks were written fraudulently. On July 6, 2012, the Sheriff’s Office received a report of a Larceny of a scooter from the same residence.
The Sheriff’s Office began an investigation, collected evidence, and conducted interviews.
During the investigation, the scooter was recovered at a local motorcycle business and returned to the victim.
On August 7, 2012, Investigator Wesley Waters applied for and obtained warrants charging Kelly Denise Martinez, age 42, of Manuel Drive in Washington with one count of Felony Larceny and one count of Obtaining Property by False Pretenses for taking and selling the victim’s scooter. On August 11, 2012, Martinez was arrested by the Sheriff’s Office
and held in the Beaufort County Detention Center on a $3,000.00 secured bond set by Magistrate
Donald Salder.
As a result of the fraud investigation, Investigator Waters applied for and obtained additional warrants charging Martinez with six counts of Obtaining Property by False Pretenses, two counts of Attempted Obtaining Property by False Pretenses, five counts of
Forgery of Endorsement, five counts of Uttering forged Endorsement and one count of Exploit Disabled/Elder Adult Lacking Capacity. On August 11, 2012, Martinez was arrested by the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office and was held in the Beaufort County Detention Center on an additional $30,000.00 secured bond set by Magistrate David Curtis.
