On October 20, 2017, the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a Fraud. The victim reported he had been defrauded out of approximately $50,000.00.

During the course of the investigation, it was determined that through a six-month time period, using the victims debit card and bank account, the suspect made numerous transactions for her personal benefit. As a result of information and evidence gathered, Investigators with the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office applied for and obtained warrants charging Mattie Sue Cromwell, age 40, of Bath with thirty-three counts of Obtaining Property by False Pretense, twenty-two counts of Identity Theft, eleven counts of Forgery of an Instrument and eleven counts of Uttering a Forged Instrument.
