The Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office was awarded Reaccreditation by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies on July 21, 2012 at the CALEA Conference in Scottsdale, Arizona. The award means that the Sheriff’s Office will continue to be an
internationally accredited law enforcement agency for the next three years. Accreditation is a highly prized recognition of law enforcement professional excellence that was first awarded to the Sheriff’s Office in 2006. Of the 100 Sheriff’s Offices in NC, only four others are accredited: Durham, Forsyth, Cumberland, and Hoke.
Verification by a team of out-of-state assessors that the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office meets the Commission’s state-of-the-art standards is part of a voluntary process that occurred in February of this year. The assessors reported their findings to the Commission and the results were reviewed before a vote by the Commission. The Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office has to comply with 383 applicable standards of professionalism in order to maintain accredited status. The Sheriff’s Office must submit annual reports to CALEA attesting continued compliance with those standards under which it was initially accredited.
